Passionate About Helping Others

Serenity Circle is created and founded by a select few individuals who have personally struggled with alcohol and drug addictions. We know how addiction can destroy self worth, self love, value, family and home life, finances, personal and professional relations. We have been fortunate to also know and experience how recovery can empower and rebuild what was destroyed by our addiction. Some of us have completed in-patient treatment, some of us have not. Some of us have years of clean time, some of us have only a few months. We ALL have the same thing in common. We have struggled with addiction and recovery, and our goal is to give back what was so freely given to us by the aid and guidance of a fellow recovered addict/alcoholic.

We practice the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. In our study of the "big book" we learn the 12 steps and adopt a new way of life through working the 12 steps. Step 12 outlines how we, as recovered and recovering individuals, try to carry this message to alcoholics and addicts and practice these principles in all our affairs. In doing this final step, we are able to give back what so freely given to us. We, as recovered individuals, are educated and equipped with tools and knowledge to carry the message of "hope, faith and courage "to another addict or alcoholic who is battling addiction. There is strength in numbers when it comes to recovery. It is very empowering to be in a room filled with recovered people. We have a sense of comradery, understanding and acceptance for one another.

For some people who are struggling in active addiction, this opportunity to carry the message to others may never come. This often unheard cry for help from thousands of people suffering with mental health and addictions is overwhelming. This cry for help is often missed, ignored or simply there is not enough space in a local facility to accommodate their needs. They report to a local hospital to surrender themselves to a detox facility, are able to complete the painful experience of withdrawal, only to be discharged back onto the streets without any further help, guidance or plan to them to stay clean and sober. Most are added to a long and never ending waitlist, in which they are told to please be patient and someone will contact them soon for their admission details. Days and sometimes months go by, and unfortunately, there are far too many who never make it to a facility for treatment. Without proper guidance or support, they are left feeling utterly hopeless and alone. They quickly relapse back to their drug of choice. Some die in their addictions, homeless and alone on the streets.

There is a gap that critically needs to be bridged for people suffering with drug and alcohol addiction. The gap happens between detox and awaiting a vacancy in a Rehabilitation Centre, then again after attending a treatment program. The gap after treatment presents as this: a person has successfully completed 15 to 90 days of inpatient treatment at Rehabilitation Centre. They are feeling confident, empowered with a good support system with online meetings, potentially working with a sponsor, or maybe a sponsee of their own. They graduate and are discharged home if they have a home to go to. Many in addiction do not have a place to call "home." They do not have family or real friends; they have destroyed those relationships in their addiction. How does one rebuild a life with just the clothes on their back, maybe a cell phone to use, and a wallet that is empty? How do they pay for first and last month's rent, set-up utilities, furnish a place and fill a home with groceries? The amount is astronomical and to some, unattainable. They begin to feel defeated, experience self-pity and that hopeless feeling they know all too well. They start to slip back into a place where they are frail, shaky and withdrawn. The disease of addiction is never cured; it can only be put into remission. Addiction is always there, waiting for that moment of fragility, depression and hopelessness to once again take control of their life. This only ends one of two ways, relapse and back to the old life and eventually death or the choice to re-enter some sort of recovery. The chance of death by overdose is higher for a person who has completed treatment, and then relapses. Today only 10% of people recover from addiction. Only 10% attain and maintain a life of sobriety once being afflicted with addiction.

Serenity Circle Recovery Farm is a safe haven, a vision of hope, strength and courage for those leaving a traditional treatment program. We provide a transitional environment to call "home" until residents are ready to enter the next chapter of their lives. We believe in providing our residents with a full 12 step program with independence and the choice in their day to day growth with guidance from those that have felt, thought and lived the exact same things they have ... and today are happy, joyous and free. Their recovery will consist of in-house fellowship meetings, online meetings, open discussion, guest speakers, a sponsor with full 12 step work, counselling, prayer and meditation, interacting and caring for animals, daily routine and structure, scheduling skills with assistance in any other needs they may have. Education, training, apprenticeships and jobs are also available for our residents.

Serenity Circle is located on a charming 50 acre farm in the countryside of Essex County. The farm has a large animal barn, hobby garage, walking park and 25 acres of trailed forest. Adopted and abandoned animals will be cared for by our residents, building a caring, loving relationship for participants on road to back to a state of health. Some hobby animals are also in attendance such as chickens providing the residents with the opportunity to care for chickens, collect eggs and enjoy farm fresh eggs. In essence, participants will learn to run their own small business through caring for the chickens, inventory and selling the eggs, purchasing food with money raised from selling the eggs, and maintain the process at a profit for their own account.

We understand that each person and situation are unique and income, education, age, drug of choice and history will be varied. Our program has no specific set number of days or months. A resident will "graduate" and move to the next chapter of life when they, along with guidance from staff, feel they are ready for what awaits them.

We kindly thank you for your support and invite you to share in our vison of a better life through staying with us at Serenity Circle Recovery Farm.
